What Is It?
Hand scraped hardwood flooring is an antique style of hardwood that is weathered and aged by hand. Often referred to as hand-sculpted hardwood, this style of hardwood offers a look that is defined by the artist that performs the sculpting.
We should point out that hand scraped hardwood flooring is different than distressed hardwood flooring and reclaimed hardwood flooring. All three achieve a similarly distressed appearance, but using different methods. Distressed hardwood flooring is aged and weathered using a machine and reclaimed hardwood is manufactured by retrieving old beams and logs from their natural environment.
Although distressed hardwood offers convenience, many feel that it doesn’t provide the highly individualized character of hand scraped wood. It’s also more time and resource intensive to manufacture than the other two distressed hardwood varieties. Oftentimes, hand scraped hardwood is considered to be a happy medium between distressed hardwood and reclaimed hardwood.
Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring Care
After hardwood has been scraped, a tough urethane finish is usually applied to protect the wood and ensure long-lasting shine. Generally, a broom and dustpan are all that’s needed to clean hand scraped floors. Your hand scraped hardwood may require periodic refinishing and scratch repair depending on the traffic it receives, but usually this isn’t an issue. When cleaning your floors you should keep in mind that excessive water and certain cleaners can be damaging to wood.
