You may not realize it…
You may not realize it, but there are quite a few things you might be doing that can be harmful to the beauty of your hardwood flooring. It may seem simple and harmless, but trust us, it can, and will, do damage in the long run.
- Skipping the Welcome Mat
For whatever reason, many people will skip buying a welcome mat without realizing that this small investment is one of the best ways to protect their floors. Not wiping the bottom of your shoes before walking on hardwood can be detrimental to your flooring, as the dirt and grit on the soles of your shoes can act as sandpaper to your hardwood flooring, scratching and scuffing the surface over time.
- Not trimming Sparky’s Nails
Too many pet owners do not trim the nails of their furry friends. This is a huge mistake, as their long claws will scratch your gorgeous hardwood flooring. The sound of your puppy coming down the hallway to greet you may be comforting, but as soon as they play fetch indoors, those overgrown nails sliding across the floor will make you cringe.
- Skipping Furniture Padding
This is a detail that is often times overlooked. We usually look at the big picture, such as where to place the furniture, so we don’t think about what should go under the furniture. Padding, such as felt, cork, or rubber, should be attached to the bottoms of any legs of furniture that sit on hardwood floors. This is an extremely important barrier between your hardwoods, and the potential scratches and scrapes caused by moving furniture such as couches, dining chairs, and tables. Most of these items will get moved, rearranged, or put aside to make room for guests, creating situations where they might be dragged across the surface of your floors, damaging the finish. Pay particular attention to the legs of dining chairs, because we scoot these back and forth across the hardwood more frequently than other furniture, dragging them out and creating scratches.
In order to maintain your hardwood flooring and keep it looking beautiful for many years to come, make sure to follow these tips. As long as caution is taken, and preventions are put in place, you should have no problem keeping your hardwood in pristine condition.
