If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your flooring lately you’ve likely been looking at some inspiration photos. You’ve probably noticed that not all hardwood floors are installed the same way!

We’ll cover the five most common types of hardwood flooring patterns. Our flooring design experts here at Floor Coverings International Hillsborough have seen it all and are here to offer their in-depth knowledge of hardwood floors.

Straight Hardwood Floors

The straight hardwood floor pattern is the most common and usually the most cost-effective. You’ve likely seen this pattern hundreds of times and never given it a second thought. For those that are perfectly happy with standard hardwood flooring, this is the way to go.

Depending on the way it’s installed, it can either make your space look wider or longer. This is an excellent question for one of our design experts! Feel free to get in touch with us to schedule a free consultation.

Random Pattern Hardwood Floors

The random pattern isn’t quite as crazy as it sounds. The main difference between random and straight is the difference in wood plank widths. For example, a hardwood plank with a width of 4” could be next to a plank with a width of 7”. We’ve noticed that it gives a more rustic feeling to spaces that utilize this style.

Diagonal Pattern

Using a diagonal wood pattern is an excellent way to show off the long lines of a space. This is why we often see it in luxurious spaces. Another great benefit of the diagonal pattern is that it can help open a room up!

Parquet Pattern

You’ve likely seen the parquet pattern in older homes as it was most popular decades ago. However, the appeal to the parquet pattern comes from the skill and time that it takes to install. It’s certainly not a DIY project for ambitious homeowners.

Herringbone Pattern

The herringbone pattern is one of the more trendy hardwood floor patterns in recent years. It’s a unique design that’s eye-catching and fun! You’ve likely seen it used in kitchen backsplashes as well. The one drawback is that it has a tendency to make spaces feel smaller than they really are.
