When properly cared for, tile flooring can last you for decades. We’re here to help you avoid the most common mistakes that homeowners make when performing tile maintenance. Most of these aren’t serious mistakes that will cause immediate problems. However, if you’re able to avoid these small maintenance hiccups, your floors will look amazing for years to come.
Avoid Wet Mopping
Mopping your tile floors is a classic chore, but you might be doing it incorrectly! If you are using an extremely wet mop, you might be leaving excess dirty water on the floors. This excess water can easily get into the porous grout and lead to mildew growth. Using a slightly damp mop will help eliminate the chance of dirty grout. Who would’ve thought that mopping could lead to discolored grout!
Pro Tip #1: Make sure your mop is clean!
Using any cleaning products that contain abrasive materials is not recommended! While it may seem like using something abrasive will help grind out stubborn dirt and grime, it’s actually just damaging your floors. When the finish on your tile floors is damaged, this leaves them more susceptible to pitting and staining. Your floors might end up getting even dirtier!
Say No To Bleach
Using bleach as a cleaning solution is another common mistake that seems like a good idea at the time, but will lead to more trouble down the road. Bleach is an intense cleaning solution and using it is an easy way to discolor and damage your grout. We recommend going with a much more mild solution.
Pro Tip #2: Don’t use cleaners that contain dye! You’ll stain your grout.
