One of the most common questions we see is, “how long will my flooring last?” The answer will depend on the type of flooring you have, the amount of traffic in your space, and how well you take care of it. However, our flooring experts here at Floor Coverings International Hillsborough have seen and installed enough floors to know the general lifespan of most flooring options.

Before we dive into flooring lifespans, we want to remind everyone that the best way to make your floors last for years to come is proper care and maintenance! Regularly cleaning your floors, taking shoes off, and the occasional professional deep clean job will go a long way towards extending the lifespan of your floors.

Carpet Flooring Lifespan

On average, we estimate that carpet flooring can last anywhere between 5 – 15 years. The quality of your carpet will make a big difference so consider your purchase an investment for the future! If you have pets, a big family, or don’t love to vacuum, your mileage may vary. Like we said, proper care and regular cleaning will ensure you get the most out of your carpet.

Hardwood Flooring Lifespan

Hardwood flooring is great because it can last a lifetime with proper care. You can expect 25+ years out of your hardwood floors. The ability to refinish your floors 5+ times is one of the main reasons why your hardwood floors will last so long. We’ve even heard of floors that last longer than the house they were installed in! Engineered hardwood won’t last quite as long, about 12-25 years, but is a good budget-friendly alternative.

Laminate & Vinyl Floor Lifespans

We’ve found that laminate flooring has a lifespan of 15 – 25 years and vinyl flooring, a lifespan of 10-20 years. These are both excellent options if you want the look of hardwood or tile but are working with a lower budget. These are both cheaper for the materials as well as cheaper to install.

There are many different variables that go into the longevity of your flooring. Our New Jersey flooring experts are more than happy to help answer any flooring questions you may have. Get in touch with us today, and ask away!
