Please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m the owner of the site, Thrifty Frugal Mom, where I share simple recipes as well as ideas to make it easy for you to manage your home on a budget. My husband, 4 young children and I recently moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and are in the process of fixing up a beautiful older house here that has great “bones” but had just been a little neglected the last number of years. It’s been quite a job, especially because we are trying to do it without spending a lot of money! One of my favorite places to be is in my kitchen baking, cooking and tweaking recipes. I also love to read and quality time spent with friends and family is a total energy booster for me!
What’s one type of flooring you use in your kitchen and why?
I’m actually a fan of laminate that looks like hardwood. You get the warm look of wood without the trouble of trying to keep it from getting scratched etc. And unlike tile, you don’t need to worry about it chipping- plus it’s not cold like tile. We just finished up a kitchen remodel at our current house and chose a water-proof laminate that was great quality but reasonably priced too. I’m super happy with it!
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I started blogging June 2009 when our oldest was almost a year old. I had recently quit my job as a pharmacy technician and was transitioning to being a full time stay at home mom, and to be honest, I was feeling a little lost and a tiny bit bored because I suddenly had all this time on my hands. I’ve always loved saving money and I enjoyed reading various blogs and one day I kind of had this “aha” moment and was like, you know, I should start a blog about saving money and the things that I do to live frugally. And that’s how Thrifty Frugal Mom was born! Soon after that, Parents.com contacted me about hosting my blog on there site. I blogged there for 3 years before going independent again 2 years ago.
If you visit my blog now, you’ll find lots of easy recipes, homemaking inspiration and money saving tips. I’m also super excited because I’m starting to work on some home decor posts too! And I come at all of those things from a frugal view.
I love that blogging gives me a creative outlet that also allows me to help other people by providing them resources that enable them to make good meals for their family, save money and find inspiration in homemaking. And I really value the relationships that I’ve built through blogging! Connecting with my readers is something that is super important to me and I make it a point to try to reply to every email and every comment on my site.
Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration? If so, which ones?
I actually don’t follow any blog regularly, although I’m constantly reading blogs. It’s more that I just read blogs as I come across them when something catches my eye. I have quite a few blogs that I follow on Instagram and often find inspiration there. I also LOVE Pinterest and when we’re working at a remodel project or I’m working at decorating a room, I often search for ideas there. In fact, I have a secret Pinterest board for each room in our house so that when I see something that I love while I’m on Pinterest or on someone’s blog, I can simply pin it and then go find it later when I’m wanting to work on that room.
Can you explain a recent project or post you’ve been working on?
As I mentioned, we are in the process of remodeling an older house that we recently bought. The kitchen was in pretty bad shape– poor layout, cabinets that were falling apart, terrible lighting etc. We just finished totally gutting it and turned it into a beautiful, classic white kitchen that is way more functional and perfect to work in- all on a relatively low budget! I haven’t gotten any complete “after” pictures taken yet, because I’m still in the process of decorating it, but here’s my inspiration board as well as a sneak peek at our new kitchen. I’ll be sharing more pictures of the fully renovated kitchen on my site soon!
